Healthy Eating: Food Swap Style

Healthy eating doesn’t mean you have to diet and count calories like it’s a second job.

 Simple alternatives to our more indulgent favorites are out there. No, we’re not talking about eating a head of cauliflower instead of a doughnut. (For that matter, have a doughnut now and then!) It’s about balance, and choosing a healthier substitute when given the opportunity. Even by incorporating a few healthy upgrades throughout the week, you’ll be getting more of the “good” stuff (and less of the not so good).

 Here’s a list of common favorites, and some healthier counterparts that will still satisfy. Try subbing-in these alternatives when you can!

 When you want apple-cinnamon instant oatmeal, try steel-cut oats with 1⁄4 cup of fresh chopped apples, and a dash of cinnamon.

cinnoatmealIt’s got more nutrition, and you’ll feel full longer, since less-processed oats take longer to digest. Oatmeal is also better for you than most granola– which usually contains lots of sugar and extra fat.
